can i put my baby in stroller in the plane?
i am travelling to india in a few weeks, via Air india. i called Air india helpline to ask if i can take a stroller into the plane or in have to check in at the gate. what she told me is a bit confusing. she told me that i don’t have to check in the stroller at the gate, i can take it into the plane. and as i have a baby with me. i will be given the front row seat (that has more leg room) and i can put my stroller in that area and i can put my baby into the stroller while on the plane so i don’t have to put her in my lap all the time. i am still not convinced about it though. because its not safe to put a baby into stroller like this. what do u think. did any of you have done this? thanx in advance.

I’ve never heard of the baby riding in the stroller on the plane! That doesn’t sound safe at all. You can take the stroller up to the gate and they’ll put it up near the front of the plane and you get it back when you get off the plane.

You can take the stroller on the plane, as long as it’s small enough to go in the overhead baggage. I was specifically told that you have 2 options when traveling with a little one. Either your lap, or buy a ticket for them to have their own seat, and have the baby in the car seat.

That sounds weird. Every time I have flown and there was a baby on the plane they leave the stroller at the plane door and the store it up front somewhere and the baby is either in a car seat in their own seat or someone is holding them.

How would it be any less safe than having the baby in your lap?

I can’t believe any airline would allow that because it would be a safety hazard. maybe they meant they would put it in the closet while you are on board. usually you have to check a stroller because they have a limit of carry ons.

so long as there is room for the stroller and there is no turbulence i cant see why there would be a problem

When I flew with my daughter it was only within the Continental United States. I took her stroller with me all the way to the gate. They checked it at the gate. Depending on how packed your flight is depends on if you can take the car seat with you. If it is packed you will be required to have your child sit on your lap as you only paid for one seat. I did not get special boarding due to traveling with a child. Each person that you talk to is going to tell you something different. You won’t know till you actually get there. MAKE SURE you have his/her birth certificate and shot records also. Or you will not be able to fly with your child.

That does seem a little unsafe… I would rather have my son on my lap. I’m actually flying from NYC to Hawaii with him (he’s 7.5 months now) in 2 weeks.. and I’ve decided to check the stroller and then keep him on my lap (even if he is a little squirmy!) … It’s also a hassle to have the stroller and the baby and the carry-on, etc.. airlines generally let you check car seats and strollers for FREE.. which is awesome cause most airlines don’t even let you check your 1st luggage bag for free these days! If I were you.. I would be worried that the staff on the plane would not be as accommodating as the person on the phone. The lady I spoke with on the phone made it sound like they almost encourage open breastfeeding on the plane when I had a question, lol.. but I know for a fact a lot of times the plane crew will actually ask nursing mother’s to be more discrete or cover up more or let them know they have to make everyone else feel more comfortable.. almost guilty for doing it! It goes person by person of course.. I’ve heard great stories too! I think traveling with a baby is difficult enough without having to worry about the stroller. I’d just check it and let them handle it. Seems the easiest really.

ahhh that doesn’t sound right, you can take your stroller but before u get in to the plane you can pass to the air host and they will keep it for you and before you leave the plane they’ll give it back to you. also if your getting the front row where the big tv screen then they will provide you a small crib that will mount to that wall.
hope that helps…
have a greaaaaaaaaaaaaaaattttt time in INDIA!!!!!

I don’t know about air india.
But I used to be a ticket agent for US Air. We required you to gate check strollers. A stroller would never be allowed for the baby to ride in. You were allowed to hold your child on your lap, or purchase a seat for child to ride in a carseat.
