Normally strollers and car seats are allowed to be gate-checked for free IF the child is with the passenger. If the child is not there, it is then no longer a "mobility device", exempt from baggage rules and fees.

My sister brought me a combined stroller car seat. She was annoyed at arrival because she was charged as baggage for it. "I thought they were free!" She lamented. Well, yes, if you have a child with you! (She was single at the time).

Maybe they'll be nice and let it through? Just don't mention it and say you want to bring it to the gate. It might look funny (phantom child syndrome?) but just say you want it gate-checked, not luggage checked because there is less chance of damage.

Please don't try to bring it in the plane itself. One of our jobs as the greeter was to "catch" parents trying to do this. There is simply no room to store them!

Good luck! Eclipsepearl

I can't answer your question directly, because you don't say who your sister is flying with? The issue I think others have missed is that your sister maybe travelling alone, and as such has no child to which the stroller would be allocated to in terms of a baggage allowance. So in that scenario she would have to ensure that it was covered under her allowance, and pay any applicable fees for an additional item or extra weight. trailblazer

Take the stroller to the gate (allow extra time to get the stroller through security. If it's a folding stroller, you can probably just send it through the xray machine. If it won't fit, it'll take a little extra time for TSA to search it). Ask the gate agent for a planeside claim ticket for your stroller. The agent will tell you exactly where to leave the stroller (in most airports, you take it down the jetway and leave it there just before you board the plane. In some airports, like Chicago O'Hare, they take the stroller from you at the gate and send it down to the crew in a cargo elevator). They'll put it in a special place in the cargo hold so that it can be returned to you at the gate at your destination.

There is no charge for this service, and it doesn't count as one of your checked items.

If you are connecting, you can repeat this process for each leg of your trip.

EDIT: With respect to the person talking about travelling alone, you can STILL check a stroller via the method I've described above, even if you aren't travelling with a small child.

Some airlines will accept a stroller as checked baggage without any charge or without counting it as a "checked bag" if you are travelling with a small child. Some airlines will accept it even if you aren't. Check with your airline to make sure, but you can ALWAYS do a "gate check" of a stroller, even if you're not travelling with a child. Scotty Doesnt Know

Of course they do! Kay this is what you do, don't check it in. While she's boarding the plane, give it to one of the workers standing near the door of the plane. Hand it over to them, and then board the plane. After everyone goes in, they're gonna put the stroller in to the plane. After the plane has landed, when she gets out she'll find it somewhere near the entrance of the plane again. Be sure to tell your sister to ask for assistance from the airline crew :)
Hope i helped. Mahin M
