Should I buy a baby carrier AND a stroller?

baby stroller

I will be buying a baby sling for my baby, and I plan on using it most of the time. Would I need to buy a stroller aswell, or is that more of a luxury item in my case? I can see the usefulness of it if I get tired of carrying baby. But I really only have money for the necessities now.

I had both, and the stroller was VERY useful for long outings- like shopping at the mall, or going to the zoo. once baby is a little older, and heavier, the sling is a little cumbersome and makes you sore when you wear it for long periods of time.

But personally I only used my stroller on long walks, and like I mentioned above- usually it was the sling. Is it over yet?

There are travel systems that aren’t too badly priced, which consist of the carrier and the stroller….
The only drawback is that once the baby outgrows the carrier (it doubles as a carseat), you have to buy a new carseat. Anti ACORN (COI) protestor

If you have to choose between the two, I would go with the carrier. Babies love to be carried next to mommy! If you are breastfeeding then you can also learn to breastfeed in the sling. If your baby is fussy then you can put him/her in the carrier while you get things done around the house.

I recommend the Ergo baby carrier if you can afford it. It goes up to 40lbs so you can use it for a couple of years. It’s the same price as the Baby Bjorn, but WAY better in comfort and quality.

You can always buy a cheap umbrella stroller from a consignment shop, garage sale, or craigslist. I have twins and sometimes I carry one in the carrier and one in the single stroller. I got it at Wal-Mart for $40. Misty

I would skip it. It’s something you can always buy later and you will probably find that your baby wants nothing to do with the stroller until he or she is about a year old, maybe older. I have four children and I have never really used the stroller until around 2 years old, and then it was very limited. You can always buy one later, and I really doubt you will miss it in the first few months at least. morgan

I have a two month old daughter, and so far, I only use a sling. It’s more convenient for me since I have a small car (an Eclipse), and a stroller wouldn’t fit easily. Besides, the strollers I’m interested in are not to be used for infants under 6 months old. I’ll use the sling until she outgrows it, then I’ll buy a stroller. Besides, slings are much cheaper :) Good luck. Chel

i have the infant car seat carrier, a sling, and a stroller.

my baby HATES the sling and will not even go in it for more than 3 seconds with out screaming. My brother’s baby is the same way too.

she loves being in the car seat, and loves the stroller for when we go on walks.

unfortuneatly what you plan for and what the baby will do can be different and you might be doing both. in my opinion they are both luxury items but the stroller might last longer than a baby sling. Amber

I bought a double stroller before baby #2 came, and witl my Moby wrap (much more versatile than a sling or carrier, less strain on the back, cheaper) Im still using my single stroller! So much for the $400 double stroller in the closet.
You can always get a stroller later, once you know if you need one. victoria

I know what you mean .
You can get cheap 40 dollar strollers from walmart .
    OR
150 dollars for a good stroller and carseat together .
(you need a car seat 100%)
If you live near an ikea you can get a crib for 100$
or the baby can sleep in a play pen $50 .
You can get bottles and passifiers from the dollar store .
    Along with socks .
Get no name diapers or 2 dozen cloth diapers (will save soooo much in the long run)
Get plain white one pieces .
    A few thick sleepers .
    A blanket or two.
    You’ll be fine Morgan.

Both are extremely useful! What I would do is buy the carrier to begin with. Babies can be pretty upset in a stroller for the 3 months (approx.). They want to be close to their mummies and are very settled in a carrier. However they do start to get very heavy in the carrier and there are times you need more freedom for carrying things, trying on clothes etc. If you hold out as long as you can and wait for your baby to have good head control, you can probably buy a very cheap stroller. Many people end up with one once their baby can sit upright anyway because so many of the big fancy baby ones are too heavy and hard to maneuver around small shop aisles. Pear

You definately need a stroller in my opinion…and you can find one cheap…have you tried a used baby consignment store or craigslist They can have great ones for pretty cheap…but in the beginning the sling is nice, but DEF nice to have a stroller after a few months too. MomSuz

The sling should work well on it’s own. You may want to consider a knit wrap that would work well on your back as well as front and side, for when your baby is a little older and heavier :)

I agree that it would be nice to have a place set your baby when when you need a break. Maybe you should try craigslist for a used one. I was shocked at how cheap people are selling nice strollers. Good luck with your search. happiehart

I would say maybe hold off on the stroller for now. Reason being, maybe your baby will not like the sling after awhile, so you might want to buy a stroller down the road.
As another poster said though, they are handy for long trips or day trips and will make things easier on you.
    I had both, and I never used my sling. Daniel’s Mum~Due 04/03/10

yes, you should. the stroller will come in handy if someone besides you plans on taking baby out. strollers can be used for years, so it’s a pretty good investment. 3rdXCharm

I carried the baby carrier into stores for the first 4 months. It was so much easier than getting him out of the car seat. For walks, I used a sling until he got too heavy. Honestly, I would save your money to buy a quality umbrella (lightweight) stroller a little later. Unless you are lazy/weak and can’t carry the infant carrier/car seat, you don’t need a stroller to put it on if you can’t afford it. My Lo was 20 lbs. at 5 months and a stroller IS a necessity now Lauren

  16. DisgruntledCynic Says:

Depends, I have both. At times my newborn wants to be put down, so having the stroller allows him some down time when we are out and about. I also live in a very northern climate, and sometimes using the stroller (I have a model with heavy duty tires that easily get through snow) is necessary to protect my baby from the elements as he doesn’t fit under my parka in the sling. He can be bundled up really well in the stroller; not so much while I’m wearing him. I don’t drive, so I find both are absolutely necessary to get around, usually we go from place to place in the stroller and once we get there I pop him in the sling. Also, small parenting tidbit, people don’t try to touch the baby so much when you are wearing him so if you are going some place where you don’t want anyone touching your baby (especially strangers in crowded places like the mall) then wear him or her. This brings baby into your personal space, and people are naturally less likely to invade. I have to do this at the Dr’s office; there is a huge H1N1 outbreak where I live but strangers still try to touch my baby in the waiting room when he is in his stroller or car seat! DisgruntledCynic

A stroller is very useful, but with a sling already, I would wait until you have the money JoeR
