Can I travel from US to Mexico with a stroller WITHOUT a baby? Stroller is a gift; do I need to check it in?

I have a new stroller for my brother’s baby, I bought it in the US and need to take it with me when I fly to Mexico. Can I unpack the stroller and bring it with me (as a regular stroller so it can be taken inside the airplane) even though I would NOT be traveling with a baby?
Maybe I need to leave it in the box and have it checked in as luggage, in which case I am afraid I will need to pay a lot of money.
The stroller’s box weighs 60 pounds and measures 17×30x31 inches.
The policy in American Airlines:
“Additional [personal ] items that will be allowed above and beyond the restrictions listed above include:
* Approved safety seat for lap or ticketed child
* Umbrella stroller for lap or ticketed child
* Diaper bag for lap or ticketed child”
I am afraid if I don’t travel with a “lap or ticketed child” I will not be able to bring the stroller as carry on…
Thanks for your answers!
