why are people so suspicious about opening baby’s things while pregnant?

I am 26 weeks pregnant and bought the stroller and car seat already and set up the stroller already since I am by myself. I also bought a lot of baby things and put them in the closet. People have told me that it is not good to buy baby things like a stroller and open it before the baby is born. How many of you agree or disagree with that and how many of you have purchased baby things in the past and now you still have a healthy baby that came home with you.
