As long as the stroller reclines, you can put the baby in it without the car seat from day one. Whether the baby prefers it or not is another question. I think we started around 3-4 months. As for the car seat, the infant seats that come with the travel systems can never be turned forward facing. You will have to buy a convertible car seat. The baby can not be turned forward facing until he is 1 year old AND 20 pounds. It is recommended to leave them rear facing as long as your seat will allow it for safety reasons.

Your baby should be 20lbs before facing him the other direction in a carseat and the carseat MUST be a forward facing carseat, not a rear facing carseat, like the ones that come with strollers. I think that when your child sits well without support is when he should be able to sit safely in his stroller without his carseat.

it's pretty much cool at any point to stop using the carseat in the stroller its just basically up to you.. i did because it was easier if he fell asleep in the store he was already in the carseat and ready to go.

as far as turning the carseat around not until the baby is 1 or at least 25 lbs.

it should say it on the side of the carseat

but it is the law that the baby has to be at least one for a front facing carseat

How old is your son? By 4 months old most babies are pretty happy to be propped up in the sitting position. He'd probably be happier in just the stroller than being in the car seat connected to the stroller.

As far as the car seat goes, what kind do you have? If it's a basic rear facing seat designed for 0-12 month old babies, you can not turn it around. You'll need to wait until he is at least 22 lbs and 1 year old and then you can buy a forward facing car seat.
