Because they unfairly consider their dogs to be a substitute for children? I see dog strollers all the time here in NYC. A lot of people get “teacup” (i.e. runts) dogs that would get squashed if they walked in congested areas.

However, I don’t have a problem with people doing this with dogs that are disabled or too old to walk very far. K9Rescuer

    ha ha that is me!
I have a 14 year old Yorkie that is blind now and has one leg that does not work, but he still loves to go outside and enjoy life a little as I walk my pug that is one now. Kember

They are handy for small dogs, especially if you’re going to a place like a fair or something,or on a very long walk where the dog may get tired. The dogs are also safe in the stroller. They’re nice for old dogs, too. But some people just like them because their dogs are their “babies!” I see nothing wrong with it myself, but a dog needs to walk as well, for exercise. Dances With Woofs!

If the dog cannot take proper walks for some reason (elderly, medical condition, injury, very young, etc…) but the person plans to be out walking for a while (longer than the dog would be able to walk itself), or if they are taking the dog somewhere where others wouldn’t appreciate a dog walking around (but would be fine with a dog off the ground and in a stroller) or it wouldn’t be safe for a dog to be walking around (a little dog could easily be trod on in a large crowd), then I understand totally. It’s a practical solution to a legitimate problem. But otherwise, I can’t really think of a good reason a dog can’t use it’s own 4 legs to get around. Most dogs really enjoy walking themselves, and it’s good for them.

But as long as the dog gets properly walked and exercised at other times, and is well-cared-for, that’s all I care about. If they take excellent care of their dog, I couldn’t really care less if they use a stroller. It’s not harming their dog or me. Amanda

it is only necessary to have a dog in a stroller if is unwell or has been injured. Hayley

Because some people have dogs with bad knees or hips and don’t want to over work them causing them pain.
also because its there dog and they can.
Whats the big deal its not hurting the dog why should you even care? They treat the dog like their baby atleast they are not beating the dog. Only monsters support BSL

Oh god I have NO idea! It’s total silliness isnt it?! I guess people think their dogs like it for some reason… My dog has never turned around to me and said “Mum, you know what? I dont feel like walking today but would like some fresh air… You think you could put me in a stroller?”
Some people are bizarre with their dogs… I love mine to the end of the earth and back and they are my kids, but they ARE dogs and are treated as such…
I think that if a dog is old and actually cant walk or something then it is acceptable as the owner is still letting their dog enjoy life outside the walls of the house… BUT it’s not often I see a disabled dog in one of these strollers - more often than not its a cute designer dog with a bow in its hair wanting to get out and run. my brother in law used to do that with his pit bull but that was 25 years ago. She was very old and could not walk anymore. They didn’t have doggie wheelchairs then so she rode around in a full sized baby pram for almost 6 months until she finally passed away. I think it was nice for her to be able to get fresh air and be able to get a street hotdog every day for lunch even though she couldn’t walk. dances with cats

What does it matter? I’d rather see dogs pampered and babied than all the ones tied up in yards, abandoned on the streets, or waiting to be put down in kill shelters.

To answer your question, some people do indeed consider their dogs baby subsititues, others have small dogs that would get hurt being walked in crowded conditions or dogs that are too old or sickly to walk long distances.
We actually got a double size dog stroller for our small dachshunds when we go to the Florida Keys because the streets in summer are too hot for them to walk on.
We also have used it to contain them if we go somewhere crowded.

As long as the dogs get enough walks and exercise, what does it matter if they are in strollers sometimes?

I wish more people treated their dogs as if they were family. rescue member

    Its stupid really … Kristin

Maybe they have a very old arthritic dog and want it to get fresh air. If the dog is in bad shape then at least the dog is out and about instead of sitting inside the house.
I have a dog stroller and I used to use it to cart around my dog show table and I would put my dog in it instead of using a crate I would have to carry. Silver Awareness Ribbon

Under normal circumstances, this is ridiculous. However, saying that, I have a shih tzu that went into renal failure because he overheated on a walk. We still walk him, but we carry him when his breathing starts to get labored. It would be a lot easier if we had a stroller for him… Aussies are my ♥ Dogs

  13. My Bestfriend is 4-Legged Says:

I’ve seen people put there elderly dogs in a stroller and walk around the neighborhood, no big deal. The elderly/disabled dogs will be able to get some fresh air instead of spending time in the house all day. My Bestfriend is 4-Legged
